Obama's Afghanistan Surge

I support a troop surge in Afghanistan to combat and destroy the Taliban and Al Qaeda. The Afghan government is corrupt and imperfect and it needs to step up the plate and get serious when it comes to dealing with its internal affairs.

However, missing from President Obama address at West Point last night was any mention of victory. The speech focused on policy and goals and troop drawdowns. But victory, how is it to be defined in this case? How will it be ultimately achieved? Will we allow our forces to carry out their mission with full autonomy and steering clear of Rules of Engagement that force them to fight with one hand tied behind their back and the other on a phone with lawyers?

Again, a surge is the right move. I hope that American troop withdrawals will not be used as political and electoral pawns in 2011.

Pray for our men and women and what they do.
